UNICAL SUG: SENATE REJECTS EXECUTIVE PRESIDENTS LIST OF NOMINATIONS FOR JUDICIARY

S.U.G SENATE PRESS RELEASE BY COMMITTEE ON MEDIA AND PUBLICITY OVER REJECTION OF NOMINEES FOR JUDICIARY

 

SENATE REJECTS EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT’s NOMINATIONS, DEMANDS REVIEW, AND RESUBMISSION FOR RECONSIDERATION BY SENATE.

The Student community is by this notice informed that the Student Union Government Senate has rejected the list of nominations for the Judiciary arm of government.

 

The S.U.G executive President on the 21st June 2017, presented the list of nominations for Judiciary to the Senate for Screening and Confirmation.

 

The S.U.G Senate led by Sen. Etta Enyi in ensuring that the process moves swiftly so as to inaugurate the third arm of government needed for the smooth running of the Union, presented the letter to the Chairman screening committee on the same day.

 

SCREENING BY THE S.U.G SENATE SCREENING COMMITTEE 

 

The Senate screening committee sat on Wednesday, 28th June 2017, for the screening of the nominees from the Executive President.

 

After the screening process and investigations on nominees at the level of the Faculty of law and Students Affairs Division and in line with the S.U.G Constitution; the Screening committee provided a detailed report on its exercise.

 

SENATE CONVENES EMERGENCY SESSION

 

The Senate convened an emergency session on Wednesday 5th, July 2017, for the consideration of the Screening report and Confirmation of eligible nominees.

 

The Chairman of the Committee Sen. Asuquo Asuquo stated that some nominees were found wanting; not satisfying constitutional provisions for such offices.

 

After further deliberations on the floor of the House, The House voted to reject some nominees pending their satisfaction of constitutional provisions and investigation by the Senate Fact Finding committee on some concerns raised.

 

The session was abruptly adjourned due to elapsing of the time allotted by school management for a session.

 

RESOLUTIONS AFTER THE SESSION

 

The Senate Screening, Fact Finding and Constitutional Matters Committees in consultation with the Senate leadership decided to reject the entirety of the list, seeking a review by the Executive President for reconsideration and possible Confirmation.

 

The Constitution provides for 14 days for nominees to be considered by the Senate.

 

The S.U.G SENATE by the provisions of its guidelines sits only on working days (Mon-Fri) between 6:00am and 6:00pm

 

The Senate sat for consideration of nominees on 5th July, (Day 11, due to public holidays for the Muslim Salah celebration).

 

The S.U.G Senate President put a call across to the S.U.G President on the same day, informing Him that nominations had been rejected, and should be reviewed, and resubmitted for reconsideration.

 

The Director of information issued a public notice about the Rejection of the Nominations and N.U.C.J Reported it amongst its headlines for the Day.

 

The Scribe of the Senate had called the President on Thursday 6th July, to deliver the ‘letter of rejection’ by the Senate. The President who stated that He was unavailable directed the Senate Scribe to deliver the letter to His Chief Press Secretary. The ‘Letter of Rejection‘ was duly submitted same day.

 

The S.U.G Senate awaits a reviewed list for consideration before its next sitting. The Executive council and nominees are to abide by the Senate directives as contravening would be seen as flouting the constitution and punishable by Law.

 

The Senate wishes to extend its best wishes and reassure the Student community of its willingness to serve and ensure that it discharges its functions with Equity, Justice, Good conscience, and reverence to the Student Union Constitution without fear and favor.
